The Galactic Senate Wookiees Were Made from Chewbacca's Archived Costume

Three Wookiee delegates represent Kashyyyk in a floating repulsorpod during the Senate sequence. According to creature effects supervisor Nick Dudman, they are not three costumes — they are one actor in the archived Chewbacca suit, filmed three times with the hair adjusted between takes.
Why It Matters
Most entries in this catalog describe a reference someone chose to plant. This one describes a reference that exists because a costume was in storage, which makes it a different species of detail altogether: an artifact of production economy that reads, on screen, as world-building.
Nothing about the shot announces itself as a callback. A viewer sees Kashyyyk holding a Senate seat and takes it as ordinary political texture in a film that is largely about procedure. The Chewbacca connection is invisible unless you are told. And yet the reason those Wookiees are on screen at all is that the production had a Wookiee suit and a reason not to build three more.
There is a nice consequence to this. The shot was a thrift decision in 1999 and it became load-bearing lore afterwards — Kashyyyk's political standing in the Republic went on to matter across later films and animation. The constraint hardened into canon. That happens more often in long franchises than the official accounts tend to admit, and it is worth cataloguing when a source is candid enough to say so, as Dudman is here.
For anyone comparing it to the rest of the Star Wars entries: this is the opposite of a planted reference. It is a reference discovered after the fact, in the props department.
