In the Shire epilogue, Elanor Gamgee runs to her father. She is played by Alexandra Astin, Sean Astin's daughter, so the reunion on screen is also a reunion off it.

Why It Matters

The scene has a difficult job. It has to make three films of leaving home land in a few seconds, on a character whose entire arc has been about wanting to go back, and it has to do it after the audience has already absorbed one ending. Casting the actor's own child is a way of putting something genuinely unperformed into the shot.

What is unusual here is the direction of the borrowing. The ordinary version of this device uses a family member as a private joke — a name in a background prop, a face in a crowd, meaningful to the crew and invisible to everyone else. This one runs the other way: the off-screen relationship is doing dramatic work in the scene, and it is doing it for viewers who have no idea it is there. You do not need to know to feel it.

That makes it an unusual kind of catalogue entry. Most Easter eggs are inert until decoded — the pleasure is entirely in the recognition, and a viewer who misses it has lost nothing except the recognition. This one functions at full strength on someone who never learns the fact. Knowing changes what you are watching, but not knowing does not diminish it.

It is also, quietly, about the same thing the epilogue is about. The film's last movement is concerned with what survives the story and gets handed to the next generation. Casting a real child into that scene is not a decoration on the theme; it is the theme, performed by people it is actually true of.
